Echinococcus granulosus (cystic echinococcosis)

Record number:
15
Adverse Occurrence type:
MPHO Type:
Estimated frequency:
2 case reports; No additional cases are reported in Pubmed, but as the disease can be latent for years in many tissues and organs (liver, lung, kidney, heart). Usually easily diagnosed before organ procurement through imaging (cysts).
Alerting signals, symptoms, evidence of occurrence:
Case 1. Liver with an isolated calcified cyst, which was resected prior to transplantation. No evidence of infection/seroconversion in the recipient after transplantation. Case 2. Liver recipient dies 4 weeks after transplant of causes unrelated to the liver with a calcified Echinococcus granulosus. No serology results are reported.
Demonstration of imputability or root cause:
Disease present in the graft. No disease progression in liver with lesion resected prior to transplantation, even without therapy; second case only had 4 weeks of follow-up. Authors suggest that donor was the origin of infection, as the calcified lesion was older than 4 weeks.
Imputability grade:
2 Probable
